MAIN PURPOSE OF AGE CONCERN LIVERPOOL AND SEFTON CHARITY:
- Age Concern Liverpool and Sefton’s mission is: To promote happy, healthy and fulfilled lives for older people. By creating opportunities to connect with others, discover purpose; contribute and provide exceptional care and support services.
- The purpose(s) of the charity Age Concern Liverpool and Sefton are: –
i) To promote and assist the general good of all old people in any geographical area but with a particular focus on North Merseyside meaning Liverpool, Sefton and all areas north of the River Mersey making gifts of sums of money and goods to such old people, providing facilities for physical and mental recreation, developing physical improvement, further health, relieving poverty, distress or sickness or pursuing any object which now or hereafter may be deemed by law to be charitable and to assist the work of statutory authorities and voluntary organisations engaged in pursuing the objects of the Association.
ii) To promote and organise co-operation in the achievement of the objects of the Association and to that end, to bring together representatives of the authorities and organisations engaged in the furtherance of the objects of the Association wherever they may operate but with particular focus on North Merseyside.

It is essential to refresh the trustee board, from time to time, to bring different points of view to a discussion. Giving insight into our beneficiaries’ needs and experience. Making new contacts in the community and thinking of new ways of doing things. Creating the opportunity to:
- bring in new ways of reaching your beneficiaries
- keep pace with developments in technology
- get current ideas or contacts to help you raise funds
WHAT IS A TRUSTEE?
A trustee of a charity ensures that the charity is operating within its charitable purpose and that its beneficiaries are being fully supported. Trustees have overall control of the charity and make decisions on behalf of the charity. They are responsible for ensuring a clear strategy and that its work and goals are in line with its vision. Trustees safeguard the charity’s assets including physical assets like property and intangible ones like its reputation.
Trustees operate within two sets of formal rules:
1. The governing document, the Memorandum and Articles of Association or the Articles for short.
2. The law, particularly, for example, the Trustee Act 2000 (for unincorporated charities), Insolvency Acts, Companies Acts, and Charity Acts.
Trustees work collectively as a board and take decisions at formal board meetings. Once a decision has been collectively made all trustees are bound to support that decision.
In most cases, trustees are volunteers and are not paid for their role. Age Concern Liverpool and Sefton offer reimbursement of reasonable expenses to trustees, for example travel, and childcare. Any other payment will usually require the permission of the Charity Commission.
The 12 Main Responsibilities of Trustees
Determine the organisation’s mission and vision
Only the trustee board has the power to create and change Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton’s essential mission and vision. Every policy decision the board makes is designed to help the organisation realise the aims laid out in the mission.
Engage in strategic planning
Trustee boards make strategic policy and work with the Chief Executive to develop long-term strategic plans. They tie their meeting agendas to key points in the strategic plan to ensure they are dealing with key issues.
Formulate requisite policies
The board creates policies to govern organisational activity, providing guidance for staff, setting up systems for reporting and monitoring, and establishing an ethical framework for all those who work for or on behalf of the organisation. It also creates policy governing the behaviour of trustees and all aspects of board business.
Approve and monitor the organisation’s programmes and services
The board sees to it that all the organisation’s programmes and services obey the letter of the law and effectively serve the organisation’s mission. The board’s vision for the organisation determines what direction programming will take.
Ensure adequate financial resources
The trustee board makes sure that the organisation has the resources to carry out its mission. Their work in this area may involve creating policies governing financial reserves and fundraising practice.
Provide effective fiscal oversight and ensure sound risk management
The trustee board approves the annual financial statement and budget, monitors spending, creates policies to manage and protect organisational assets and property and sees to it that finances are handled according to the letter of the law in the best interests of the organisation. It also protects the organisation against liability by providing adequate insurance and creating policy designed to minimise the amount of risk for the organisation.
Select and support the Chief Executive (CE) and review his or her performance
The board creates policy covering CE remuneration, hires the CE and oversees conducting his or her annual assessment. The board is also responsible for developing and supporting the CE.
Understand and respect the relationship between board and staff
The board needs to recognise areas of staff responsibility and avoid interfering in matters that are properly the domain of staff. At the same time, it creates policy to guide staff activities and safeguard the interests of the organisation.
Act as a responsible employer
The board creates comprehensive, fair personnel policies that meet legal requirements and protect both the organisation and those who work for it. It monitors organisational activity to make sure that practice lives up to policy.
Enhance the organisation’s public image
Through their own behaviour, their governance oversight, and their activities on behalf of the organisation, trustees enhance and protect the reputation of their organisation.
Carefully select and induct new board members
The board ensures the quality of governance for the organisation by carefully selecting and training new board members. It recruits and develops individuals who can provide the best leadership for the organisation.
Carry out board business efficiently
The board keeps its own house in order by conducting productive meetings where key organisational issues are dealt with in an efficient way. It creates effective committees and provides them with adequate resources and personnel. It hires consultants to bring needed expertise into the organisation. It engages in regular performance appraisals, periodic self-assessment, and development activities to strengthen its effectiveness.

1. Be committed and supportive of the values, ethics of the purpose, objects and values of Age Concern Liverpool and Sefton
2. Be constructive about other Trustees opinions in discussions (and in response to staff members’ contributions at meetings).
3. Be able to act responsibly and reasonably when undertaking such duties and performing tasks with an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship
4. A willingness to speak their mind and be able to maintain confidentiality on sensitive and confidential information
5. Understand the importance and purpose of meetings and be committed to preparing for them adequately and attending them regularly, with a willingness to devote the time and effort required.

Currently the Board meets four times a year, on Tuesday mornings at 10.15am, this meeting will last approximately 2.5 hours. There are also Finance Committee meetings which usually occurs two weeks in advance of the full board meeting, this also takes place on Tuesday mornings at 10.15am. One of the Board meetings is an Annual General Meeting held once a year to receive an Annual Report and Finance Audit.
From time to time there may also be the necessity to hold an extraordinary meeting, if an issue has arisen which the Board needs to be informed about, to ensure that timely decisions are made.
While the current recruitment is for Trustees, over time roles such as Chair and Treasurer will become available for election by the board.
